Aesthetics Department
The Aesthetics Department: Empowering Future-Ready Creators
At St. Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School (SACSS), the Aesthetics Department is a vibrant hub of innovation where students bridge the gap between imagination and real-world impact. Our curriculum is intentionally designed to nurture future-ready Canossians through two main strands: Life Arts and Performing Arts.
We have reimagined our curriculum to foster student agency through the explicit teaching of Metacognition and 21st Century Competencies (21CC). By understanding how they learn and create, our students become self-directed learners equipped for the complexities of the creative industries and beyond.
A Vision of Inclusive Innovation
Guided by our Canossian values, we ensure an inclusive classroom environment where every student, including the disadvantaged and at-risk, is supported. We believe that the arts should be accessible to all, providing a platform for every voice to be heard and every talent to be nurtured.
Life Arts: Thinking Designers & Sustainable Solvers
Our Life Arts subjects—Art, Design & Technology (D&T), and Nutrition & Food Science (NFS)—have shifted toward a Thematic and Multidisciplinary approach, ensuring learning is both relevant and authentic.
-
Design & Technology (D&T): We have pivoted from "technical making" to "problem-driven design." Utilizing our new Makerspace, students engage in Design Thinking to tackle real-world challenges. For example, rather than simply making a toy car for display, students design a vehicle specifically for a child with a physical disability, fostering deep empathy and innovation. The Makerspace serves as a collaborative incubator for 3D modeling, electronics, and rapid prototyping.
-
Nutrition & Food Science (NFS): Our curriculum emphasizes Meaningful Authentic Tasks. Students foster STEM learning through food science experiments and adapt recipes for consumers with special dietary needs. In a strategic collaboration with the Science Department, our students lead sustainability efforts, applying interdisciplinary knowledge to solve modern wellness and environmental issues.
-
Art: We embrace the future by integrating Generative AI alongside traditional artistry. This encourages adaptive thinking and allows students to explore the intersection of technology and human expression, preparing them for the evolving digital landscape.
Performing Arts: Mastery and Metacognition
The Performing Arts Education (PfE) at SACSS transcends performance. Through Music and Drama, students develop essential 21CC skills like effective communication and adaptive thinking.
-
Explicit Skill Teaching: Each unit now includes the explicit teaching of identified skills, using a metacognitive framework that encourages students to reflect on their creative journey.
-
Thematic Learning: Our drama and music modules are connected via themes that resonate with societal issues, encouraging students to be "Canossians of Influence" who lead and serve through their craft.
Pathways to the Future
We are committed to showing our students the vast horizon of career options and multiple pathways. Through our intentional curriculum mapping and partnerships, students are exposed to:
-
Industry Immersions: Gaining insights into the creative economy through professional talks and visits.
-
Higher Education Links: Strategic opportunities to explore pathways at SOTA, LASALLE, NAFA, and the University of the Arts Singapore.
Our Mission: To provide a forward-thinking, inclusive curriculum that builds the foundation for students to meet the demands of the modern world, empowering them to lead, collaborate, and serve with passion and purpose.
Whether in the kitchen, the studio, the Makerspace, or on stage, the SACSS Aesthetics Department is where passion meets purpose, and where the leaders of tomorrow begin their journey today.
